Hollywood Grueter Residence
a Steep Site Under the Hollywood Sign

The Grueter Residence is located at the base of the Hollywood sign, on a lot that is narrow at the street edge and drops off dramatically from the street. The house design comprises a series of nested L-shaped forms, which extend down the hillside, while creating large outdoor terraces overlooking the grove of sycamores and city below. The nested forms are made of board-formed concrete and designed as “fanning” cantilevers. An integral pool on the upper floor, as well as a roof terrace, capitalizes on the warm Southern California climate, and integrates indoor and outdoor spaces for living.
